It has the himalayan hills in the north and the Bay of Bengal in the south. The famous Sunderbans mangrove forest is in this state. The Ganges is the main river. It has 19 districts in all. The capital and the largest city is Kolkata, earlier known as Calcutta. The state legislature has 295 seats. The state language is Bengali. The state animal is the Royal Bengal Tiger. The two principal ports are at Kolkata and Haldia. The Darjeeling hills and the Duars are amongst the main tourist destinations in the north.
